There's a bit of irony in me writing a blog post about whether you need a blog. But here we are, and I'll give it to you straight.
The marketing crowd will tell you every business must have a blog. The truth is more nuanced: a blog can genuinely help, but a bad one does nothing, or worse.
When it's done well, a blog earns its keep in two ways:
It helps you get found. Every article is another page Google can show for a search. Someone types "how much does a website cost in Adelaide" and, if you've written a good honest answer, they find you. Now they're on your site, and they've already decided you know your stuff.
It builds trust. A few genuinely useful articles show you know your trade and you're happy to share. By the time someone contacts you, they half-trust you already. That's a warm lead, not a cold one.
Here's the part nobody tells you: a dead blog is worse than no blog.
Three posts from 2022, the newest one titled "Merry Christmas from the team", that makes a business look asleep, not active. If you're going to start a blog and abandon it in a month, don't start.
A blog also isn't a magic traffic tap. One post won't do much. It's a slow build, a handful of good articles, added steadily, that compound over time. If you want overnight results, this isn't the lever.
Ask yourself two questions:
If both are yes, a blog's a great long-term asset. If either's no, put that energy into your Google Business Profile and getting reviews instead. Better return for the effort.
Start small. Three or four solid articles answering the questions your customers actually ask, pricing, "do I need this", "how does it work". Add one every so often. Quality and consistency beat volume every time.
And if writing's not your thing, that's fine, it's something I can help set up so it more or less runs itself.
