"SEO" is one of those terms that gets thrown around to sound clever and sell you expensive packages. Let's strip the mystery off it, because for a local tradie it's simpler than the industry wants you to believe.
SEO, search engine optimisation, just means making it more likely the right people find you on Google. That's it. No dark magic. For a local business it comes down to a handful of practical things, most of which you can influence yourself.
You're not trying to rank for "plumber" against the whole country. You're trying to show up when someone in your patch searches "plumber near me" or "emergency plumber Prospect". Local. Specific. That's a game you can actually win, because your competition is just the other tradies in your area, not the entire internet.
1. Your Google Business Profile. For local searches, this is number one, bigger than your website, honestly. It's the free map listing with your details, hours, photos and reviews. Claim it, fill in everything, add photos. For "near me" searches, this is often what shows up first, right at the top.
2. Reviews. Google leans on them heavily for local rankings, and so do customers. A steady trickle of genuine Google reviews lifts you up the map and wins trust at the same time. Just ask every happy customer, one tap, one link.
3. The right words on your site. If you're a Port Adelaide tiler, the words "tiler" and "Port Adelaide" and the suburbs you cover should actually appear on your site. Sounds obvious, but plenty of sites are so vague Google can't tell what they do or where. Say it plainly.
4. A fast, mobile-friendly site. Google favours sites that load quickly and work on phones. Slow, clunky sites get buried. (Handily, this is also what your customers want.)
5. Consistent details everywhere. Your name, address and phone number identical across your site, your Google profile, Facebook, directories. Mismatches, "St" vs "Street", an old number, chip away at Google's trust in you.
Do those and you'll quietly climb past competitors still hoping to get lucky. No jargon, no dark arts, no rip-off retainer.
