Here's a number that should get your attention: a big chunk of people will leave a website if it takes more than about three seconds to load. Three seconds. That's it.
They don't complain. They don't email you. They just hit back and click the next result, probably a competitor. Speed isn't a techy nice-to-have; it's the difference between an enquiry and a bounce.
Two reasons.
People are impatient. Especially on a phone, on the go, deciding who to call. A slow site reads as "this business is a bit rubbish" before they've even judged your work. Fair? No. True? Absolutely.
Google notices too. Site speed is a ranking factor. A slow site doesn't just lose the people who reach it, it makes it harder for people to reach it in the first place. Double whammy.
In plain terms, usually one of these:
The reverse, mostly:
You shouldn't have to think about any of this, it's the builder's job, not yours. But it's worth knowing what "fast" depends on, so when someone quotes you for a site, you can ask the one question that matters: "How fast will it load on a phone?"
If they look blank, keep looking.
Every site I build is engineered to be quick from the ground up, lean code, compressed images, proper hosting. Want to see how yours stacks up? Send me the link and I'll give it a quick speed check, no charge.
