Showing up on Google feels like a dark art. It isn't. For a local business, most of the wins come from a handful of free, straightforward things, and you can do the first few this week.
Here's the order I'd tackle them in.
This is the single most important thing, and it's free. Your Google Business Profile is the listing that shows up in the map results and the little box on the right when someone searches your name. For local searches like "electrician near me", the map results often sit above the regular website results.
To nail it:
Half of local businesses either don't have one or have a half-empty one. Fully completing yours puts you ahead of most of your competitors immediately.
Reviews are a huge ranking and trust factor. A business with 15 genuine reviews beats an identical one with two.
The trick is to just ask, every happy customer, right after the job. Make it one tap by sending them your Google review link in your handover text or email. You don't need hundreds. A steady trickle of real ones does the job.
Your Business Profile gets you on the map. A website backs it up and catches the searches the map doesn't. For Google to rank it, the basics matter:
None of this is trickery. It's just being clear about who you are and making the site easy to use. (Good news: this is baked into every site I build.)
Google trusts businesses that look consistent across the web. Make sure your name, address, and phone number are identical on your website, your Google Business Profile, Facebook, and any directories (True Local, Yellow Pages, and the like). Little mismatches, "St" vs "Street", an old phone number, chip away at trust.
Here's the honest bit: SEO is a slow burn, not a switch. A new site takes weeks to months to build up in the rankings as Google indexes it and trust grows. Anyone promising you page one overnight is selling snake oil.
The businesses that win are the ones that do the basics and stay consistent, one review a fortnight, the odd Business Profile post, a site that's genuinely useful. It compounds.
Do those and you'll quietly climb past competitors who are still relying on being lucky.
